Pilates is an exercise modality aimed at strengthening your deep abdominal, buttock and spinal muscles to improve the muscular support and stability of your spine, and to improve your posture.
Pain can inhibit the function of the important stabilising muscles. Once pain has gone the muscle function does not automatically return to normal, therefore it is necessary to strengthen the muscles to reduce the likelihood of the injury and pain returning again. Pilates is a gentle and effective way to re-train these muscles.
If you’re not in pain Pilates can also help to optimise your spinal health – and reduce the likelihood of injury or back pain from occurring.
Step 1: Your initial screening assessment
