Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise modality aimed at strengthening your deep abdominal, buttock and spinal muscles to improve the muscular support and stability of your spine, and to improve your posture.

Why do Pilates?

Pain can inhibit the function of the important stabilising muscles. Once pain has gone the muscle function does not automatically return to normal, therefore it is necessary to strengthen the muscles to reduce the likelihood of the injury and pain returning again. Pilates is a gentle and effective way to re-train these muscles.

If you’re not in pain Pilates can also help to optimise your spinal health – and reduce the likelihood of injury or back pain from occurring.

How do I start?

Step 1: Your initial screening assessment

  • This enables your Exercise Physiologist to determine the best course of action for you. We assess your range of motion and spinal stabilising strength.

Step 2: Individualising your program

  • If you haven’t done Pilates before we strongly recommend you undertake 1-2 one-on-one sessions with your Exercise Physiologist. This way we can be confident that you will be performing your Pilates program correctly.

Step 3: Individual or small groups – it’s up to you!

  • You are more than welcome to continue with individual sessions – these are the best way to get the most from your Pilates program. However small groups, of no more than 4 people, will allow you to keep the cost down whilst still getting the supervision and guidance required!
