Winter Wellness in the Workplace
3 things employers can do now, a practical read for people leaders and WHS managers
Winter is one of the most demanding seasons for workplace health. Sick leave climbs, MSK complaints rise as people move less and sit longer, and team energy quietly drops alongside the shorter, darker days. For people leaders and WHS managers, it is also the time of year where a few well-timed actions can make a noticeable difference to absenteeism, productivity and culture.
The pressure shows up in different ways across different teams. Frontline and physical workers feel it through stiffer joints, slower warm-ups and a higher injury risk in colder conditions. Office and hybrid workers feel it through longer sedentary stretches, lower daylight exposure and the slow creep of disengagement. Whatever the workforce, the underlying drivers are the same, and the good news is that they respond well to small, proactive steps.
Here are three practical actions you can put in place this winter. None of them require a major budget or a long lead time, and each one is grounded in what we see working across the workplaces we partner with.
Build movement into the working day. Short stretch breaks, walking meetings and standing time help counter the sedentary patterns that drive winter MSK complaints. Even five minutes of structured movement, two or three times a day, can ease tension before it becomes a strain or a claim.
Book a winter MSK or ergonomic check. Early screening catches the small issues, like a tight shoulder, a poor desk setup or a niggling lower back, before they turn into extended leave or a workers compensation claim. Onsite sessions also give your team a clear signal that their wellbeing is taken seriously.
Make mental health support visible. Regular manager check-ins, EAP reminders and encouraging daylight breaks help your team stay connected when low mood and disengagement tend to creep in. Visibility matters more than volume here, a short, consistent message often lands better than a one-off campaign.
Together, these three steps protect your team's physical and mental health through the toughest stretch of the year, and they give people leaders something concrete to point to when the question ‘what are we doing about winter wellness’ comes up.
